Brace use guide

General instructions for safe brace use

Braces should be used as directed by the ordering provider. Fit, wear time, and activity limits can vary based on the brace type and the patient's condition.

1

Review the provider order and confirm which brace was prescribed.

2

Place the brace on the correct body area before tightening straps.

3

Secure straps so the brace feels supportive, but not painful or restrictive.

4

Check skin, circulation, and comfort after applying the brace.

5

Wear the brace only as instructed by the provider or product instructions.

6

Remove the brace and contact a clinician if numbness, swelling, skin breakdown, or worsening pain occurs.

Back braces

Usually positioned around the lower back and abdomen, then tightened evenly for support. Avoid overtightening.

Knee braces

Should be centered around the knee joint with straps secured in the correct order based on the brace design.

Wrist / hand braces

Should support the wrist without cutting off circulation or limiting finger movement more than instructed.
